It was formerly one of the great cities of Iran; its ruins are at modern Rey, near Tehran. Settlements date back to 3rd millennium BC. Under the
Sassanid dynasty , it was a centre of Zoroastrianism. According to
Avesta,
Rhagae is the 13th city of the world.
Captured by the Caliphates in AD 641, It grew in importance until the 12th century. In 1220 it was destroyed by Mongols, and citizens were massacred for resisting. The
Abbasi Caliph Harun ol-Rashid, memorialized in 1001 Nights, was born there around 765. The only remaining architectural features from ancient Rhagae are two towers.
