Al Moghanna; scientist and writer gained his title because he used to wear a green mask that covered his face. He became the leader of a liberation movement against the Abbasid Caliphs in Transoxiana. Moghanna was an ethnic Persian from Marv named Hakim ebn Hashem, originally a tailor. He became a commander for Abu Muslim of Khorasan. After Abu Muslim's murder, he served under Abdoljabbar for a while but then Moghanna claimed to be an incarnation of God, a role, he insisted, passed to him from Abu Muslim; who received it via Imam Ali from the Prophet Mohammad. He believed in re-incarnation and claimed among close followers that he had received the soul of Abu Muslim. He viewed the death of Abu Muslim as a mutiny and waged war against the Abbasid rule.Moghanna was reputed to wear a veil in order to cover up his beauty; however, the Abbasids claimed that he wore it to hide his ugliness, being one-eyed and bald. His followers among public were known as Sepid Jamegan because they wore white clothes in opposition to the Abbasid black. He was arrested and sent to Al-Mansour's court in Baghdad. After spending a while in prison, he reflected on his doctrine and methods of spreading his ideology. After his release, he went to Marv, gathered people and asked them if they knew who he was! When people exclaimed that he was Hakim ebn Hashem, he yelled, "No, I am God who has come to you in the body of a human, as it was the case with Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mohammad and Abu Muslim"He was well-educated and had mastered many sciences of his time, thus he is reputed to have engaged in magic and quackery to impress his followers as a maker of miracles. He sent missionaries to Khorasan and Transoxiana claiming that he could bring the dead back to life and that he would take his followers to heavens to the extent that even the Turkish Khaghan of Vararood supported his claim.Moghanna was instrumental to the formation of the Khorramdin Movement, a sect that claimed Abu Muslim to be the Mehdi and denied his death. When Moghanna's followers became a great threat, the Abbasid Caliph al-Mehdi sent several commanders to crush the rebellion. Moghanna crossed the Jeyhoon River and set his headquarters at the Siam Castle near the city of Kesh. He repelled several attacks until al-Mehdi marched against him. When Moghanna learned that al-Mehdi has reached Neishabour, entered an alliance with the Turkish Khaghan. This alliance was a grave mistake as the Turkic tribes started looting small cities, killing Muslims, and enslaving their women near Bukhara. True or not, this was the pretext for the Abbasid Caliph to declare a Jihad against Moghanna. Al-Mehdi mobilized a great army that finally took Moghanna under siege in his castle.According to Abbasid account, Moghanna poisoned himself, and set fire to his house when he was on the verge of being captured but his followers claimed that he took his clothes off and jumped into a furnace after which only a smoke, and he was never seen again. After his death, the sect continued to exist until the 12th century, waiting for Moghanna to return again.Sheikh Sedoogh, a well known Shia scholar has a b
