Achaemenid king Ardeshir, or Artaxerxes 1st Makrocheir ascended the throne after the death of his father Xerxes. Greek historians called Ardeshir Long-hand (Longimanus) either because his hands reached his knees when he stood, or it was the extent of his power that reached far-away lands as Egypt.Ardeshir reigned for 41 years, and since his time, Iran’s legendary history began calling him Bahman Esfandiar. He was known to be a man of justice who followed the path of his grandfather, Dariush the Great. His daughter Parizad married Dariush 2.In 460 B.C., Ardeshir suppressed a revolt in Egypt. During Ardeshir’s reign, around 441 B.C. Iranian calendar was regulated and Zoroastrian Mazdisna names were given to each month.Ardeshir died in 424 B.C.
