New Apis Found For Egyptians

By: Mir M.Hosseini

After Dariush suppressed the revolts in each corner of the vast Persian Empire, he visited the Satrapy of Egypt in September 518 B.C. Aryandes was appointed as Satrap of Egypt by Cambyses and had served for more than four years. Aryandes had just restored order in Egypt before king Dariush arrived. He was therefore well acquainted with the country of Nile and told Dariush how he could get support for Persians.
A few weeks before Dariush' arrival the Apis bull, a deity which was a manifestation of the creation god Ptah had died. The great king buried Apis and ordered the search for a new Apis, which was found on November, 9. Dariush also gave precious gifts to the temple of Neith of Sais and the sanctuary of Osiris. He then invited the wise men of Egypt to collect the old Pharaonic Laws. Dariush the Great also dedicated a temple to Amun. This respect towards other nations' cultural values has been unique characteristics of the Persian Empire.
Dariush also ordered construction of a canal between the river Nile and the Red Sea; a great project of the time which was completed in 497.
According to Herodotus, Aryandes as governor of Egypt had issued the purest silver coinage in his own name that competed with Daric, gold coinage issued by Dariush. This was the reason why Dariush had Aryandes executed after a quarter of century serving as Satrap of Egypt.
After Aryandes, Pharandates became the Satrap of Egypt.
