Barsineh or Statira 2nd (340/339-320) was the daughter Dariush 3rd, the last Shahanshah of th Achaemenid Empire.Dariush 3rd: given the nickname Codamannus by Greeks fled the battlefield at the Battle of Issus in 333 BC and his family including his mother, wife, two daughters and his 5 year old son became captives of Macedonian Alexander. During negotiations before the battle of Gaugamela (October, 1, 331 BC), Dariush offered Barsineh to Alexander as his bride, adding as her dowry all country west of the Euphrates. Alexander refused, saying that he knew that her father had already promised the girl to his general Mazaeus. The real reason may have been another one: he had started an affair with Barsineh's mother Statira. Statira was captured in November 333 and died in childbirth in September 331. Dariush could not have been the father of the baby.In March 324, Alexander took Barsineh as his wife and received her new name, Statira after her deceased mother. At the same time, Alexander married to Parysatis, the daughter of the former Persian king Artaxerxes 3rd (Ochus). After Alexander's death, Barsineh (Statira 2.) was killed in 323 BCE alongside her sister Drypteis.
