    The son of King Phraortes, was the first king of Media (625 - 585 BC) He sealed his alliance with King Nebu Polassar of Babylon through marriage of his daughter, Amytis with Nebu Polassar's son, Nebu Chadnezzar II, who constructed the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for his Median wife, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The allies conquered the Assyrians and destroyed Nineveh in 612 BC. Cyaxares died ten years after the Battle of Halys with Lydia which ended with an eclipse on May 28, 585 BC. He was succeeded by his son, Astyages, who was the maternal grandfather of Cyrus the Great through his daughter Mandana.
