Portuguese Occupy Hormoz Island

May, 4, 1515 AD

This Portuguese Cannon made of brass from Hormoz Island is on display at the Miyanposhteh Palace and Military Museum in Anzali. The Portuguese Occupied Hormoz Island on May, 4/, 515Eight years after the first invasion of the Persian Gulf by admiral Albuquerque, the Portuguese navy occupies the Hormoz island with more troops. This marks the start of western invasion of the Middle East. In a decree issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1493, eastern islands were granted to the Portuguese while western islands' ownership was given to the Spanish. Unfortunately, at that time Iranians were not using firearms and cannons yet and that was a major drawback in their wars against invading armies. This weakness had made Shah Ismail sad but Iranians did not employ cannons until the reign of Shah Abbas. During the years that followed until 1521, most of the Iranian islands including Bahrain were occupied. Because the invading armies' cannons could penetrate Iranian castles and the Iranian archers were no match for riflemen. Even Bandar Abbas became occupied for some time but it did not last long due to public uprisings and guerrilla fight. (Updated: Jan, 13, 2012)
